Exchange Guide

On Africans Market, trading doesn't only happen with money. Many users choose to exchange one item directly for another. When publishing a listing, a seller can set "Exchange" as the transaction type to signal they are open to bartering.

Advantages

No money neededGet an item you need by offering something you no longer use.
Exchange + top-upIf the two items aren't worth exactly the same, agree on a small cash top-up.
Eco-friendlyBartering extends the life of products.

Risks to know about

  • Defective product: a major fault discovered after the exchange (dead battery, locked device).
  • Counterfeit goods: a fake item exchanged for your genuine one.
  • Remote exchange: the most dangerous trap — never ship your item in exchange for a promise to send one back.

Your golden rules

  • No remote exchange. The exchange must happen in person.
  • 📍 Meet in a busy public place, without being rushed.
  • 🔍 Inspect what you receive: for electronics, insert your own SIM card and test core functions; for clothing, check condition and authenticity.
  • Be wary of offers that seem too good to be true.

Message template to confirm an agreement

Before meeting, you can send this summary to the other party:

"Hello, I'd like to exchange my item for yours. Summary: my item [name, condition] for your item [name, condition]. Top-up: [none / amount]. We'll each test the other's item before confirming, in a public place."
